Inkbound vs WriteControl: Which One to Choose for Writing a Novel?
Last updated: October 2026
For transparency: I'm the founder of Inkbound. The information about WriteControl comes from its official pricing page, checked on October 29, 2026. Prices and limits can change, so check them before you decide.
Quick verdict
Choose WriteControl if you often write offline or on Android, if you juggle several projects at once, or if you're aiming to self-publish and want an ePub and a print-ready PDF without leaving the tool. Choose Inkbound if your novel means keeping track of a world and a timeline, and you want a grammar checker without paying for a subscription.
On the basics, the two are alike: chapters, character sheets, automatic saving, version history. The difference comes down to price and to what each one puts in its free plan.
What WriteControl does well
If you've looked for novel-writing software in French, you've probably come across WriteControl. It's an established tool, available in five languages, and its free plan covers the core of the work:
- an editor with chapter structuring, chapter summaries visible at a glance and a tile view for swapping parts around;
- writing goals and stats, character sheets, a synonym dictionary and a full-screen focus mode;
- offline writing and an official Android app;
- up to 5 projects, Word and LibreOffice import, and export to Word, LibreOffice or HTML.
Premium costs €12.90 a month including VAT, with no commitment and almost three months free if you pay yearly. It adds the spelling, grammar and typography checker, the repetition detector, a thesaurus, a dictionary and an encyclopedia, a mind map, footnotes and note-taking, document uploads, 15 writing themes and up to 100 projects.
Premium also unlocks the publishing side: automatic layout, ePub export, a print-ready PDF and a dedicated tool for front matter (preface, acknowledgments…). WriteControl then offers print-on-demand, and points you to BoD (Books on Demand) to publish and sell the book with an ISBN.
Finally, Premium's AI assistance runs on monthly credits included in the plan: feedback on your text, inconsistency detection, chapter titles and summaries, character spotting, rewording and image generation.
What Inkbound offers
Inkbound is organized in chapters too, but it focuses on what surrounds the manuscript: character sheets linked by a relationship map, a world-building Codex sorted into twelve categories (geography, magic, economy, history…) and a timeline. Everything opens in the side panel while you write.
The free plan includes two projects, the grammar checker, the style assistant that highlights repetitions, adverbs and weak verbs, a personal dictionary for your invented names, version history with word-level comparison and restore, and export to PDF, Word, ODT, EPUB or plain text. It shows ads.
Premium costs US$20, paid once. It unlocks unlimited projects, removes ads, and adds Word or LibreOffice import, AI detection of characters and world elements, AI-corrected dictation, the consistency check and the guided 4-step revision. The AI features run on a free Mistral API key that you create yourself.
What Inkbound doesn't do: offline writing. There's no mobile app yet (an Android version is in the works), and it offers no print layout, no front-matter tool and no print-on-demand.

How much does each tool cost over three years?
A novel rarely gets written in less than a year. If you want a grammar checker on both sides:
- WriteControl Premium, monthly: 36 × €12.90 = €464.40.
- WriteControl Premium, yearly: with almost three months free, you pay for a little over nine months a year, so more than €340 over three years.
- Inkbound: nothing, the grammar checker is free. Premium costs US$20 once if you want the AI features and unlimited projects.
The math shifts if you plan to self-publish. WriteControl Premium includes layout, ePub and the print-ready PDF: nothing stops you from subscribing for a month or two when it's time to publish, and writing on the free plan the rest of the time. (Inkbound Premium's price is a launch price that will go up: check the current rate.)
Where WriteControl keeps the edge
The free plan is more generous on several points: five projects instead of two, offline writing, the Android app, and Word or LibreOffice import at no cost.
Then comes the end of the manuscript. You need a PDF with the right margins for the printer, an ePub for e-readers, an acknowledgments page, a preface. In WriteControl, all of that happens in one place, and print-on-demand is offered inside the tool. Inkbound exports a clean EPUB and PDF, but it doesn't do print layout. If self-publishing is your goal, that weighs heavily.
On AI, WriteControl's offer is broader, and the credits are included in the subscription: no key to create.
Where Inkbound takes the lead
In chapter 9, Léa is 17. By chapter 21, three winters have gone by. Is she 19 or 20? And her brother, who left in chapter 12, is he back yet? In Inkbound, the timeline and the Codex answer without you leaving your sentence. WriteControl has no timeline, and its world-building tools (mind map, documents) are Premium-only. For a novel that spans several years or an invented world, that's where the day-to-day difference lies. (To build that kind of world, see the basics of world-building.)
The rest comes down to what's free. The grammar checker, the style assistant and EPUB export come without a subscription, while WriteControl keeps its checker, its repetition detector and its ePub for Premium. And over several years of writing, a one-time US$20 payment weighs far less than a subscription.
How to choose
Ask yourself four questions:
- Do you often write offline, or on Android?
- Do you run more than two projects at once?
- Does your novel require tracking a complex world or timeline?
- Are you planning to self-publish, and would you rather pay by subscription or once?
If you're still torn, write the same chapter in both free plans. How the editor feels after an hour matters more than any feature list. For a wider look at the options, see our novel writing software comparison.
Happy writing!
Frequently asked questions
Is WriteControl free?
Yes. The free plan includes the editor, character sheets, stats, offline writing, the Android app and up to 5 projects. Premium costs €12.90 a month including VAT, with almost three months free if you pay yearly.
Is WriteControl's grammar checker free?
No. The spelling, grammar and typography checker, like the repetition detector, is part of Premium. In Inkbound, the grammar checker is included in the free plan.
Can you move from WriteControl to Inkbound?

Is Inkbound paid?
Two projects are free, with no time limit. Premium (unlimited projects, no ads, AI features, Word import) costs US$20 as a one-time payment, with no subscription. It's a launch price that will go up.
